Why get a flu vaccine?
Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can cause serious complications, particularly in older adults, young children and those with underlying health conditions. Unlike a common cold, flu can come on suddenly and leave you unwell for a week or more – and in vulnerable individuals, it can lead to hospitalisation or worse.
Getting vaccinated every year is the best way to protect yourself. The flu virus changes each season, which is why a new vaccine is produced annually to match the most likely circulating strains.
Vaccination also helps protect those around you who may be more vulnerable – including elderly relatives, young children and people who are immunocompromised.
Am I eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine?
The NHS provides free flu vaccinations to people who are most at risk from the effects of flu. You may be eligible if you are:

Aged 65 or over

Pregnant

Living with a long-term health condition such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease or a neurological condition

Immunocompromised (including those on immunosuppressant medication)

A carer for an elderly or disabled person

Living with someone who is immunocompromised
